Route 66, USA
Let’s start with one of the most iconic. Route 66, or the Mother Road, is one of the best known in the USA and possibly the world after the 1960s song ‘(Get your kicks) on Route 66’ made it famous.
It runs from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and finally ends in Santa Monica, California.
On the way you’ll see a rattlesnake museum, the world’s largest ball of string and hundreds of other quirky slices of Americana. Hire a Mustang for the full US experience.
North Coast Drive, Northern Ireland
If you want to take in breath-taking landscape and the wild beauty of the Northern Irish coastline then the North Coast Drive is the adventure for you.
Starting out close to Belfast you take the Causeway Coast Route, taking in Carrickfergus Castle and Glenarm.
The route then follows the coast into the wild and remote Glenariff Forest Park, skims the edge of Tievebulliagh Mountain and winds on past Ballycastle Harbour and the ruined Dunluce Castle.
In total it’s around 130 miles of stunning coast including the Giant’s Causeway, which is worth a trip on its own.
Great Ocean Road, Australia
If you’re prepared to travel for your adventures then Australia’s Great Ocean Road is 157 miles of stunning beaches, rainforest, and charming lighthouses, villages and animals.
You could see penguins, koalas, parrots and even anteaters in the wild, all the while drinking in the stunning beauty of the Shipwreck Coast.
The journey begins at Torquay in Victoria and ends in Warrnambool. When it comes to natural outstanding beauty, it’s hard to think of a more exciting road trip.
North Coast 500, Scotland
Billed as Scotland’s Route 66, this is the road trip for anyone who wants to get up close and personal with the rugged charm of Britain’s northernmost country.
It’s a circular route beginning in Inverness and following the west coast before winding even further north to take in some of the furthest coast points including Caithness and John O’Groats, and then back to Inverness.
Whether you’re a foodie, a whisky fanatic, a golf fan, a nature enthusiast or a lover of castles, there’s so much to do on this route that has been purposefully designed to show off the very best in Scottish culture.
Transfagarasan Road, Romania
For a road trip filled with twisty roads straight out of a car advert and the gothic romance connected with Transylvania, this is the adventure for you.
It’s a mountain road that crosses the Carpathian Mountains and it has gained popularity in the UK – and globally – after it was featured on Top Gear back in 2009. The route is full of hairpin turns’ long, snaking S-curves, sharp descent and some of the highest road peaks in Romania.
The challenges of the road mean it’s not one for speed and, at just 150km, it’s a relatively short road trip. But with incredible scenery and astonishing history, it’s worth taking your time over.
